Infertility problems can be addressed with the help of advances in medicines. Let us take a look at how infertility problems in females as well as males can be treated?
Women may find difficult to conceive due to many reasons. The problem of infertility can be experienced not only due to fertility problems in women but also due to the fertility problems in men. Let us take a look at such fertility problems in men as well as women and how these problems can be treated using assisted reproductive techniques.
When is artificial insemination advocated?
Artificial insemination is advocated in cases of oligospermia. Oligospermia is a condition in which the sperm count in the ejaculate is low. This condition can be the result of overheated testicles, by hot baths or anatomical causes like a varicocele.
How can oligospermia be treated?
One of the first things that a man in this condition should do is to cool down his testicles. It is recommended that they wear the boxer shorts type of underwear rather than close fitting Y-fronts so as to permit more air to circulate around the testicles. The treatment of cold water therapy has proved to be beneficial in about half the men when properly performed.
There are two medical treatments for oligospermia. The first of these is Artificial Insemination by Husband (AIH). The other option is the possibility of in-vitro fertilisation (IVF). Very low sperm counts are used to fertilise the eggs retrieved for IVF, the semen sample being deliberately diluted. If the sperm count is already very low, but the quality of the count is satisfactory, I.V.F. would seem to be a very reasonable form of treatment. The major I.V.F. clinics are accepting couples where severe oligospermia is the apparent cause of the infertility.
When is a sperm donor needed?
A donor sperm is used when the quality of sperm is not good enough to fertilise an egg. Nowadays, a donor sperm is also used to help single women to have babies or female couples to complete their family. A couple may choose a sperm donor to be their family member, relative or a close friend or an unknown donor chosen from a sperm bank or a fertility clinic. After a donor is selected, his sperms are used to fertilise the egg through the process of IUI (intra-uterine insemination) or IVF.
When is egg donor needed?
Poor egg quality or absence of eggs makes it difficult for a woman to conceive naturally. In this case help of egg donors may be needed. Egg donor is also needed when male couples want to have baby to complete their family. In this case IVF is used to fertilise the egg and implant the embryo in the female partner’s or a surrogate mother’s (in case of male couples) uterus in order to help it develop into a foetus and then into a baby. Egg donor is mainly opted by females who plan their pregnancy very late. As the quality of eggs start deteriorating with the age, older females have to opt for egg donor in some cases.
What is surrogacy?
Surrogacy is nothing but the renting of womb. Surrogacy is opted when a female is unable to carry the fertilized egg in her womb and help it develop into a foetus and carry it full term due to medical reason. In this case a female who is willing to rent a womb for a certain sum is hired to carry the baby of the couple for the period of nine months for its full term development. In this case the responsibility of taking care of the health of the surrogate mother is taken by the couples. If it is favourable for couple, they may also choose a family member, relative or a close friend to carry their baby as a surrogate mother.
